Places to visit in Diglipur
Ross & Smith Islands, also known as Twin Islands, are connected with a 50 meters narrow sand bar and its seashore is bordered with thick tropical forest. The sparkling blue water makes it a heaven for leisure, sun-bathing, swimming and adventure activities like Snorkeling and Scuba Diving. Ross & Smith Islands are home to the Olive Ridley turtles and just near the beach is the turtle nesting point and marine sanctuary, which means, being the right place at the right time, one can even witness the turtle nesting.
Ross & Smith Islands are actually two islands joined together by a sand bar to make a single group of islands. To reach these islands, a speed boat can be hired and the ride would take around 25 mins from the Ariel Bay Jetty in Diglipur. What makes these islands truly beautiful and sets them apart from the rest of the islands is that these two islands are joined by a natural, sand bar. Water is crystal clear and gem green in color. Sun bathing in Ross & Smith Islands is a wonderful experience. During high tide, the sand bar disappears leaving a trail of water between the two islands and during low tide the sand bar appears again making the islands look majestic.
Ross & Smith Islands has a Marine Sanctuary which makes it an ideal place for spotting beautiful coral reefs and colorful species from the underwater. The beach is surrounded by tropical forests and is a preferred place for trekking and trail hiking by many tourists. The clear blue waters add a touch of cleanliness to the whole experience.
Kalipur beach at Diglipur is the most visited beach for Turtle nesting in the entire Andaman Islands. The beach is pretty famous actually and the turtles do come to lay eggs here. The beach is preserved and security guards are present all day and night for the safety of the turtles. You will need a guide at night to actually spot any turtle laying eggs here. For a newbie its practically difficult to spot a turtle at night and if you are smart enough to search via a light source then forget it as the turtles won't turn up fearing danger.
The entire beach of North & Middle Andamans becomes home to thousands of turtles from various species during their nesting seasons. Kalipur Beach is one of the most famous Turtle nesting grounds preferred by maximum species of turtles to swim in and nest themselves here for their egg-laying and hatching. The forest department has specific arrangements for the safety of the turtles and their eggs. They help the eggs hatch in healthy conditions and then the baby turtles are helped swim away in the seas after they are ready to do so.
The top two places to see turtle nest in Diglipur is Kalipur Beach and Ramnagar Beach. Even at Rangat, you can see a turtle nesting at the Dhanninalah mangrove walkway.
Kalipur beach Turtle Nesting
We recommend travelers to stay at Pristine Beach Resort or Turtle resort at Diglipur to experience turtle nesting at Kalipur beach. These two properties are a few meters away from the beach. Possibly the best location to stay to experience turtle nesting in the Andaman Islands.
